Lesson 1: Welcome to Landing your Dream UX Research Role
Transcript:
Welcome to the ultimate masterclass on navigating your dream User Research Role!
Thank you for being here and I’m excited for us to go on this journey together!
And I’ve created this course not just to help you navigate your first UX job, but your second, third, and beyond.
If you’re new to the UX job market, the hardest part is bridging the gap between what you think is important and what hiring managers think is important…and since not all hiring managers are the same, that makes things even harder!
And I struggled with that. And I didn’t have the fanciest degrees or experiences.
I had to carve my own path.
I had to break some rules to take back some control of the interview
And i’ll show you how to do the same.
Since I had to break the rules, I actually pioneered some of these tips that I’ll share in this course
These tips I’ve never seen before because I created them
And I didn’t just create them to make a course to sell to you haha no
I experimented with different ways and found what works so that I can land those jobs!
And over the years, i’ve also been on the other side of the table, interviewing, hiring, and rejecting candidates
So I’ll share an inside look at how the hiring process works
I’ll teach you everything I know so you can feel confident
- Sending out your resumes
- Building out an attention-grabbing portfolio
- talking about your impact, even if you don’t think there was any impact
- Answering super technical interview questions
We’ll talk about everything from networking, how to do it, and how to do it as an introvert!
How to negotiate your offer, yes, I’m going to have you practice negotiating your salary
How do you juggle two offers? How do you juggle an offer when you’re waiting for another job that you would much rather have?
I’ll share with you my own framework on approaching whiteboard challenges, a framework that has helped hundreds of people pass their interview rounds with Google, Meta, and others
I pioneered a technique for take-home assignments that will almost GUARANTEE a call back, a technique that had a VP accuse me of cheating on it because he thought it was too good. Yup, the team had never seen a take-home assignment like mine before, and they literally had to change their interview process because of me.
I taught it to my students before, they used it, and crushed their take-home assignments as well. And I’m going to give you that technique in this course
But hey, I started out in this field not being able to land jobs.
So I created my own projects.
I’ll show you how.
And you’ll learn how to do outreach to potential clients so you can find opportunities to work and build your portfolio, outside of the usual job boards.
You’re going to get exercises to practice your responses.
And then I’ll demonstrate how I might answer them.
I’ll show you different tools for practicing your interview skills.
…and what about the tough things?
Like should you quit your tenure job as a professor to take a contract role a thousand miles away?
How do you handle layoffs?
What if you get fired?
What do you do if you get rejected 100 times? Do you quit? Keep going? What should you change?
And hey, I know what it’s like getting rejected 100 times. Doubt can settle in. Imposter syndrome creeps in.
We’ll learn all of these things, and more.
As you can see, this isn’t just a cookie-cutter curriculum.
This is your handbook on how you can control your interview experience, coming from me, who’s been there and done that, and wish something like this existed when I was struggling to guess my way to the field.
I’m really excited that you’re here, and by the end you’ll feel a lot more confident going into any interview.
So if you’re ready, I’m ready, let’s get it!
With a few words first on making the most out of this course!
